Nutrition Services

Nutrition Australia ACT provides evidence based nutrition information for early childhood services.

Our services are delivered by Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) experienced in early childhood nutrition.


Nutrition and Food Handling Course

This two hour in-service tailored for early childhood staff will help your facility meet the food and nutrition elements of The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF) and NQS requirements outlined in Elements 2.1.3 and 2.2.1 under Quality Area 2: Children's health and safety.

We will visit your facility and present the nutrition and food handling course for up to 25 staff members. Topics covered in the course include:

  • Nutrition concerns and requirements for children and infants
  • Australian Dietary Guidelines and Infant Feeding Guidelines
  • Food hygiene
  • Safe food handling practices
All attendees receive a certificate of attendance.
Menu Assessments
For childcare centres that provide food, this service helps ensure nutritional requirements for children based on the:
  • Australian Dietary Guidelines
  • Infant Feeding Guidelines
Menu assessments are based on recommendations outlined by the NQS.
Desktop Menu Assessment
An APD will assess your childcare menu based in submitteds menu and recipes.
Site Visit Menu Assessment
We will provide a one-on-one consultation at your facility to ensure your service meets the food and nutrition elements of the NQS.
Services for Parents
We will visit your facility and provide practical advice for parentsof infants, toddlers and young children.
Parent Information Sessions
This one hour session covers a range of topics of interest which include:
  • Feeding babies
  • Developing healthy eating habits
  • Dealing with fussy eaters
  • Healthy lunchboxes and snack ideas
  • Food allergies and intolerances
Sessions can also be tailored to suit your needs.
Lunchbox Seminars
This one hour session provides practical advice and inspiration for parents on packing a healthy lunchbox for their infants, toddler and young children.
Interactive Lunchbox Workshops
A 30-minute workshop where parents will prepare a healthy lunchbox for their child using a selection of healthy fresh and pre-packaged, budget and lunchbox friendly items.
Arrange to have the workshop in the morning so parents can come in to fill their child's lunchbox for the day!
All food items provided.
Cooking Demonstrations
We will visit your facility and deliver a one hour practical demonstration using quick , easy and nutritious recipes guaranteed to please the fussiest of eaters.
Parents and carers will have the opportunity to discuss their nutrition concerns and ask questions.
Numbers are limited to 25 people.

Developed by Nutrition Australia ACT Inc, and funded by the ACT Government, the ACT Nutrition Support Service (ACTNSS) supports Canberra families in making healthy food choices the easy choice.


ACTNSS provides a local one-stop-shop for free nutrition advice and support. Families can access online and telephone expert nutrition advice and visit the website to view a range of nutrition related resources such as fact sheets, healthy recipes, food ideas and meal planning suggestions.


ACTNSS also supports ACT Schools and Childcare services to help create healthy eating environments for children.


Families can subscribe to weekly News Bites containing useful, practical, and accurate nutrition information to help kids make healthy food choices.
